Speaker at Diaspora Congress

Speaker Igor Grosu said today at the Diaspora Congress that the Republic of Moldova is going through a crucial stage in joining the European Union, and the contribution of citizens abroad is "strategic and irreplaceable". He mentioned that the authorities are making efforts to create conditions for Moldovans who have gone abroad to return home.

The official thanked his fellow citizens for attending the congress and noted that "Moldova is among the few lucky countries that have such an engaged, vibrant, and well-informed diaspora".

"If until 2020–2021 we discussed in terms of whether Moldova will become an EU member state, today we discuss in terms of when and how soon. The stakes are our future," Grosu emphasized.

The official stressed the importance of the diaspora's experience and credibility, which can explain to those back home the differences between the European model and the realities in the Republic of Moldova. He noted that the diaspora has played a decisive role in electoral exercises, having a strong and mobilizing voice.

At the same time, Grosu urged the country's citizens to do their "homework," without waiting for the diaspora to compensate for institutional shortcomings.

"We cannot always rely on the support of the diaspora. We, the ones at home, must take responsibility," he said.

The speaker also stated that the state must create conditions for the reintegration of those who wish to return to the country, whether in business, professional, or educational fields.

"We have a vibrant, active, and connected diaspora. We count on you in this decisive stage," Grosu concluded.

The most important event of the year dedicated to the diaspora – the Diaspora Congress – is taking place today at the Palace of the Republic in Chișinău. The event has reached its 11th edition.

Every year, the Congress brings together Moldovans from around the world to share ideas, discuss the future of the Republic of Moldova, and identify ways for active involvement in the country's development. Thus, among the topics discussed at the Diaspora Congress are European integration; civic activism and the fight against misinformation; young people in the diaspora – tomorrow's leaders; the diaspora's involvement in local development; Moldovans in the diaspora – cultural ambassadors of the Republic of Moldova worldwide.

The event is organized by the Diaspora Relations Office, with support from GIZ Moldova, UNDP Moldova, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
