2 March 1992 - Moldova becomes member of United Nations
Chisinau, 1 March /MOLDPRES/- The beginning of 1992 proved to be quite complicated for the young state, the Republic of Moldova, recognized by the great world powers. In parliament, the parliamentary majority consisting of representatives of the Popular Front and the agrarians, is splitting more and more. It was very difficult to find a consensus on political issues and many much-needed bills did not meet the required number of votes.
On the other hand, separatist actions in the east of the country were becoming increasingly naughty and aggressive. Citizens on the left bank of the Dniester, who did not agree with secessionist ideology, were mistreated and even imprisoned. The Latin spelling had been banned, and the state flag had been replaced by the old flag of the Moldovan SSR.
Thus, Moldova needed international support, a strong voice to recognize at the highest level the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. On 4 September 1991, one week after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, head of state Mircea Snegur sent a letter on behalf of Secretary-General of the United Nations Peres de Cuellar, requesting the acceptance of our country as a member of the mst prestigious world forum.
The UN is the foundation of the multilateral system of cooperation, a family of nations that has decided to seek common solutions to common challenges. The UN is a forum where member states can discuss and address the worst challenges facing humanity - sustainable development, human rights, peace and security, humanitarian emergencies etc.
The resolution of the Security Council with the recommendation to admit the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations was voted by the General Assembly unanimously on 2 March. At the same time, Mircea Snegur delivered a speech from the UN rostrum in which he spoke about the Republic of Moldova and its place in international architecture.
Mircea Snegur spoke about the steps taken by Moldovan diplomats for the integration of our state in the system of international relations.
Immediately after the General Assembly meeting, the Moldovan delegation met with UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. There was a very concrete discussion on common steps towards stabilizing the political situation and the reforms needed for a positive economic development.
An extremely emotional moment took place on the same day. The flag of the Republic of Moldova was hoisted in front of the UN headquarters, accompanied by the singing of our state anthem. Also on 2 March in the eastern districts, the separatists started the bloody armed conflict. On 27 May 1992, by a presidential decree MP Tudor Panțâru was appointed Moldovan Ambassador to the United Nations. This mission was opened with the logistical help of Romania.
Moldova's accession to the United Nations was the second historic step after the Declaration of Independence, which revealed existence and good intentions of a people who went through hardships in millennial history.
