Head of state says Moldova's citizens again prove that they are Europeans in deeds, aspirations
Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/ - More than 112,000 people from the neighbour country have taken refuge in Moldova since the beginning of the military actions in Ukraine and almost a half of them are still here. On these days, Moldova’s citizens proved again that they are Europeans, in deeds and in aspirations. President Maia Sandu made statements to this effect at a joint news conference with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi.
The president noted that the war unleashed in Ukraine had hit the lives of millions of people, the security and peace in the region. ‘’Our country firmly condemns Russia’s military aggression against the neighbour and friendly country Ukraine. Since the first day, I have called to the ceasefire. Moldova’s citizens, border policemen, customs officers, carabineers, social assistance, physicians, rescuers, representatives of the central and local authorities, diplomats – work every day to provide support to the people who found shelter in Moldova. Thousands of citizens from all regions of Moldova meet refugees at the border and give them food, transport and accommodation. Over 3,000 people registered as volunteers, in order to provide assistance to those who have come,’’ Sandu said.
The head of state also said that the future of Moldova’s citizens is in Europe and the quick advancement on this way will help us overcome the dramatic consequences of the developments in our region.
The two Brussels officials said the European structures would support Moldova in the process of management of the flow of refugees, as well as in the process of recovery of the economy hit by the latest crises. Fifteen million euros will be provided to Moldova soon.
