Moldova closer to EU: experts highlight impact of European leaders' visit, opening of negotiation clusters
The opening of the accession clusters for Moldova, scheduled as early as September, represents a clear signal of the support the country receives on behalf of Germany, France, Poland and all member states of the European Union. These statements were made by Experts Mihai Isac and Mihai Moghildea have made statements to this effect for MOLDPRES.
According to Mihai Isac, an expert in foreign policy and international relations, the opening of accession clusters marks a symbolic and strategic moment for Moldova, a strong signal in the process of European integration.
"This is a clear signal of the support Moldova receives, as well as a recognition of the state's ability to respond to the population's desire to become an integral part of the European Union. The declaration of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, made in Chisinau, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, confirms the efforts made by our authorities and diplomats. It is a signal for citizens and the international community – the European Union stands by Moldova," said Mihai Isac.
The expert also said that the visit by the European leaders not only conveyed political support, but also reaffirmed the country's security and stability in the face of external challenges.
"The opening of accession classes is also a positive message for European investors: Moldova is a safe area for business, and in the medium term, we can expect a transformation of the country into a European investment platform, especially against the backdrop of Ukraine's reconstruction efforts," added Isac.
Mihai Moghildea, an expert at the Institute for European Policies and Reforms, said that, although it is a technical process, the opening of clusters represented a confirmation of the efforts of the Moldovan authorities.
"While 3-4 years ago, before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we were not discussing accession in real terms and believed that, only in 10-15 years, we could hope for this status, today the situation is completely different. We have a firm belief that this goal is possible. We can expect that, in next autumn, after the parliamentary elections, the member states will take a decision regarding the start of individual negotiations on chapters. By the end of this year, we could open the first negotiation chapters – especially those concerning fundamental values, justice and the rule of law. This would be a major achievement," concluded Moghildea.
During the visit on August 27, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed Germany's and the European Union's commitment to support Moldova in the process of European integration and announced that the first integration clusters would be opened as early as in next September.
