Speaker at Diaspora Forum: Moldova shows through its citizens at home and abroad that it deserves to become part of great European family

The Republic of Moldova is making efforts, working and proving through its citizens at home and abroad that it deserves to become part of the great European family. This message was delivered today by Speaker Igor Grosu at the opening of the 2026 Diaspora Forum, held in Chișinău.

The official emphasized the important role of the diaspora in promoting the image of the Republic of Moldova in host countries and in supporting the country’s European path.

“All of you have a voice in the host countries. In addition to classical diplomacy, people-to-people diplomacy is very important, because you are the first to interact, at work and in everyday life, with the citizens of these countries. You convey a message through your behavior, and those messages are very positive, for which we thank you. At the same time, there is still much work to be done. We must remind everyone that the Republic of Moldova is making efforts, working and demonstrating, through you and through those at home, that it deserves to become part of the great European family,” noted Igor Grosu.

The Speaker called on the diaspora to support communities in the Republic of Moldova in the process of reforming local public administration and to help facilitate dialogue between localities.

“We have a very ambitious domestic agenda, and I am referring to the reform of local public administration. When you come home, you inevitably end up discussing and being asked about this reform. That’s why I have a big request: help the communities. It is not a simple thing, it is not easy, but believe me, it is absolutely necessary. And it is better to do it sooner rather than later. This process involves a lot of patience, communication, understanding and negotiation between neighbors. We need strong communities that can attract investment, communities that you can connect and for which you can facilitate communication. So we must act, and I believe that the best messengers, the best facilitators and mediators in this regard are you,” said Grosu.

He encouraged active dialogue with the diaspora and stressed that the opinions, suggestions and experience of citizens living abroad are important for the development of the Republic of Moldova.

“We are here to listen to your questions and to answer them. We greatly value your opinions, suggestions, advice, criticisms and proposals. We want to know how things look from outside the country. I know you care about the Republic of Moldova. It is our good fortune that we have such a diaspora: highly connected and deeply committed to the homeland,” concluded Igor Grosu.

Every year, the Diaspora Forum brings together Moldovans from all over the world to share ideas, discuss the future of the Republic of Moldova and identify ways to engage actively in the country’s development.

The Diaspora Forum is an event organized as part of the 2026 Diaspora Days, which take place throughout August under the slogan “Wherever we are, Moldova unites us!”. The program includes events dedicated to young people, professionals, leaders of diaspora associations and all citizens interested in contributing to the development of the Republic of Moldova. The activities are organized by the Bureau for Relations with the Diaspora within the State Chancellery.
