Moldova's European path and regional security discussed by Foreign Ministers of Moldova and Cyprus
The European path of the Republic of Moldova, regional security and the strengthening of bilateral relations were the main topics discussed by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos. The meeting took place today in Nicosia, during the official visit of the Moldovan foreign minister at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart.
The two ministers praised the cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Cyprus and reviewed the progress made by our country in the process of joining the European Union. The discussions also focused on expanding cooperation in areas of common interest and developments related to regional security.
Mihai Popșoi thanked the Cypriot authorities for their support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, including during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which contributed to the official opening, in June, of negotiations on the first cluster – “Fundamentals.”
“Accession to the European Union is the most important national project of the Republic of Moldova since gaining independence. The reforms we are implementing contribute to the country’s development and to improving conditions for both citizens and the business environment by bringing them closer to European standards. We want a stronger and more resilient Republic of Moldova that, in turn, contributes to Europe’s security and prosperity. To advance on this path, we need the support of all EU member states,” said Mihai Popșoi.
For his part, Cyprus’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos reaffirmed his country’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union and encouraged the continuation of reforms.
“Cyprus has supported the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova and will continue to support its accession to the European Union. You have made remarkable progress so far, and we encourage you to maintain this pace. At the same time, we want to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest and strengthen institutional ties between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Cyprus,” the Cypriot official said.
During the meeting, the ministers also discussed ways to increase trade and attract investment to the Republic of Moldova. Mihai Popșoi encouraged Cypriot companies to take advantage of the opportunities offered by his country and noted that direct flights between Chișinău and Larnaca facilitate travel between the two states.
Another topic discussed was the protection of citizens’ rights and the facilitation of their mobility. The two officials addressed the prospect of negotiating agreements in the field of social security, as well as the mutual recognition of driving licenses and academic qualifications.
To continue the bilateral dialogue, Mihai Popșoi invited his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, to visit the Republic of Moldova.
