The development of bilateral projects in transport, trade and energy, the strengthening of regional security, and the European agenda of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine were the main topics discussed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan with his Ukrainian counterpart, Sergii Koretskyi, during their meeting held today in Kyiv.

At the joint press conference, Tofan reiterated the Republic of Moldova’s firm condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its support for a just and lasting peace. The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of Ukrainian resistance in maintaining peace and security in the region.

“Every day Ukrainians defend their cities, families and freedom, they also contribute to the security of the Republic of Moldova. Their resistance allows us to live in peace and build our future at home,” Tofan said.

For his part, Prime Minister of Ukraine Sergii Koretskyi noted the constructive dialogue with Vasile Tofan and the fulfillment of commitments made during the bilateral discussions: “From our first telephone conversation until today, everything that was said has been fulfilled. This is very important when one’s word is honored, and we greatly appreciate it.”

The officials discussed the development of road and rail corridors for the transport of Ukrainian goods, including through the European Solidarity Lanes initiative. They addressed the modernization of border crossing points and the expansion of joint control, measures intended to facilitate trade, investment and Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Tofan also highlighted the economic opportunities that bilateral relations offer the Republic of Moldova. The transit of Ukrainian goods generates revenue for the Moldovan Railways, while attracting Ukrainian companies, including in the logistics and warehousing sectors, could contribute to creating new jobs and increasing investment in our country.

In the energy sector, the two prime ministers discussed strengthening electricity interconnections and expanding cooperation in the natural gas sector. The agenda included speeding up the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Moldelectrica and Ukrenergo and preparing the project for the second circuit of the Bălți–Dnestrovsk power line. This interconnection could increase the electricity exchange capacity between the two countries by approximately 500 MW, contributing to stronger energy security and independence.

The two officials also discussed managing the water level in the Dniester River, with an emphasis on better coordination of water releases and ensuring the water needs of communities in the area.

Security and defense were also important topics of the meeting. Today in Kyiv, Moldova’s Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi and his Ukrainian counterpart, Yevhenii Khmara, signed the Agreement on Military-Technical Cooperation. The document will facilitate the exchange of experience and the use of technological solutions developed and tested by Ukraine to protect airspace.

Tofan emphasized the importance of this agreement in the context of threats to the security of the Republic of Moldova. Since the beginning of the war, the country’s airspace has been violated more than 100 times, while drones and projectile fragments have fallen on national territory.

“Moldova is and will remain a peaceful and neutral state. But neutrality does not mean that we should be defenseless. Our duty is to protect the peace and safety of our citizens,” Tofan said.

Tofan also praised Ukraine’s determination to continue its reforms under wartime conditions and reaffirmed that our countries must continue to cooperate in the process of joining the European Union.
