Foreign affairs minister of Moldova, President of Cyprus discuss strengthening Moldovan-Cypriot relations, Moldova’s European agenda

Strengthening Moldovan-Cypriot relations, the European agenda of Moldova and the next steps in the European Union accession process have been the main topics discussed by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi and President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides. The meeting took place in Nicosia, during the official visit of Moldova’s foreign affairs minister.

The officials highlighted the strong cooperation between the two countries and the importance of support on behalf of the Cypriot authorities for advancing Moldova’s European path. During Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, held in the first half of 2026, Moldova officially opened the negotiations on the first cluster of chapters, “Fundamentals.”

Mihai Popsoi thanked Cyprus for its support in the EU accession process and reaffirmed the commitment of the Moldovan authorities to continue implementing the agreed reforms.

“We are grateful to Cyprus for its support in our country’s accession process to the European Union. Moldova has officially opened four of the six negotiating clusters, and we are ready to open the final two as well,” Mihai Popsoi said.

The deputy prime minister emphasized that Cyprus’s experience in the European Union demonstrated the benefits of integration and the economic transformations that contribute to improving citizens’ lives.

“Cyprus knows from its own experience the benefits that EU membership brings and the economic transformations that create tangible changes in people’s lives. We want our citizens to enjoy the same opportunities and high-quality services,” the Moldovan foreign affairs minister said.

For his part, the President of Cyprus welcomed the progress made by Moldova and said that his country would continue to support Chișinău’s European aspirations.

“Continue the reforms necessary for accession at the same pace. This is an opportunity that you must seize and we will stand by you throughout this journey,” Nikos Christodoulides said.

During the meeting, the two officials also discussed the security situation in the region, the consequences of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the challenges faced by Moldova in this context.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi is paying an official visit to Cyprus on October 26–27, at an invitation by his Cypriot counterpart. This is the first bilateral visit by a foreign affairs minister of Moldova to Cyprus in the past 15 years.
