Moldovans working or having worked in Italy to receive pensions under new legal framework
At the beginning of today's plenary session, MPs welcomed the ratification by the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament of the bilateral Agreement on social security between the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic.
Speaker Igor Grosu said that the ratification of this document is "a big step forward, which not only strengthens the sincere friendship between our countries but also recognizes the enormous contribution of the Moldovan diaspora in Italy."
The Agreement will allow for the recognition and totalization of the periods of social contributions made in both states, thus granting Moldovan citizens the right to pensions and other social benefits on fair conditions.
The speaker thanked the Italian authorities for the openness and constant support in achieving the common goal.
"We thank the Chamber of Deputies of Italy and all those involved for supporting this important initiative for our citizens. In particular, we thank the Italian ambassador for the support provided," Grosu said.
The Agreement will provide Moldovans in Italy with access to old-age pensions, disability pensions, pensions and allowances for work accidents or occupational diseases, as well as survivor pensions.
Furthermore, the document will allow the cumulation of contribution periods from both countries, facilitating Moldovan citizens' access to pensions and other social benefits. At the same time, it will eliminate the need to travel to Italy to submit pension applications and ensure the payment of benefits directly in the Republic of Moldova without additional costs.
The document was ratified by the Italian Senate in March, followed by the favorable vote of the Chamber of Deputies. After the final vote, the Agreement will be promulgated by the President of Italy. Subsequently, the document will enter into force 60 days after promulgation. Once this stage is completed, Italy and Moldova will sign the administrative arrangements for implementation, which have already been negotiated.
The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova ratified the Agreement on social security between the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic on November 28, 2024, after the document was signed in Rome on October 31, 2024.
