President Maia Sandu today invited citizens to participate in March of Sovereignty, which will be organized on 23 June in the context of marking the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty.
“35 years ago, on June 23, 1990, Moldova made a historic step: the Parliament in Chișinău adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty. It was the first great victory in the struggle for national revival and liberation. Moldovans clearly affirmed that only the will of the people should be the foundation of the country's destiny. Back then, we chose freedom and the right to decide our own fate,” stated Maia Sandu.
In this context, Maia Sandu invited citizens to participate in the March of Sovereignty, “to celebrate the courage of our forebears and our common aspiration to live freely and with dignity in Moldova.”
“Then, in 1990, the country joyfully lived that moment. People gathered in front of the Parliament – the current Presidency – to celebrate sovereignty. I invite you on June 23, to the March of Sovereignty, to celebrate the courage of our forebears and our common aspiration to live freely and with dignity in Moldova. Come with the tricolor, with your family, hearts full of pride, at 19:00, to the monument of Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici on Alexei Mateevici Street, as a sign of respect for the past and with confidence in the future,” mentioned Maia Sandu.
The Declaration of Sovereignty was voted by the Parliament in Chișinău on June 23, 1990. The document mentions the unitary and indivisible character of the state. The Declaration of Sovereignty served as a basis for the elaboration of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova.
