Speaker welcomed Norway’s decision to turn mission in Chișinău into full-fledged embassy

Speaker Igor Grosu welcomed Norway’s decision to transform diplomatic mission in Chișinău into a full-fledged embassy. The subject was discussed during a meeting with the President of the Storting of Norway, Masud Gharahkhani, held on the sidelines of the Conference of Speakers of Parliament from the European Union member states.

The discussions focused on the parliamentary agenda, the reforms implemented by the Republic of Moldova, and the continuation of Norwegian support for the country.

According to Igor Grosu, over the past four years, Norway has provided the Republic of Moldova with approximately 190 million euros in assistance. The funds were directed toward strengthening energy security, state institutions, and the country’s resilience amid the challenges generated by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

“Norway has stood by the Republic of Moldova and supported us in overcoming crises and in our efforts to build a stronger and more resilient state,” Igor Grosu said.

The Speaker emphasized that Norway’s support had helped the Republic of Moldova address immediate challenges and continue the reforms necessary for European integration.

Another topic discussed during the meeting was the possibility of continuing Norwegian assistance in 2027, amid rising energy prices and pressure on household budgets.

“Today energy prices are rising again, and the pressure on families will be significant. We discussed the possibility of continuing this support in 2027 as well, so that vulnerable families can heat their homes and be protected from the burden of high costs,” Igor Grosu said.

The Speaker welcomed Norway’s decision to strengthen diplomatic presence in the Republic of Moldova, noting that transforming mission in Chișinău into a full-fledged embassy represents a signal of deepening relations between the two states.

“A signal that our relationship is becoming even closer,” Igor Grosu said.

Relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Norway were established on June 3, 1992, and have intensified in recent years, particularly in the areas of energy security, democratic reforms, and European integration.

Grosu is in the Italian Republic on October 15–16, where he is participating in the EU Speakers Conference. The event brings together more than 70 speakers and deputy speakers of parliament from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, as well as more than 500 delegates. This year’s discussions focus on three main topics: hybrid threats to resilient democracies, artificial intelligence and the labor market, and the role of parliaments in managing contemporary crises.
