Bar Association of Moldova announces end of general strike
The Bar Association of Moldova has announced the end of the general strike. The decision today was taken, after President Maia Sandu had said that she would submit the amendments made to the Law on Advocacy to parliament for reconsideration.
According to a press release, the Bar Association appreciates the decision not to promulgate the amendments made to the Law on Advocacy.
"The Bar Association will continue to support the implementation in national legislation of European Directives regarding the practice of the legal profession in EU member states, as well as the necessary changes to modernize and adjust the legal framework regarding advocacy to current realities," the cited source said.
President Maia Sandu today announced that she would submit the amendments made to the Law on Advocacy to parliament for reconsideration. Thus, the new parliament is to "review the draft in dialogue with professionals in the field, with civil society and with European partners, and come back with a law that ensures the independence of the profession."
The Bar Association declared a strike, as a token of protest against the amendments to the Law on Advocacy, adopted by the parliament on July 11. The association made a public appeal, calling on President Maia Sandu not to sign the amendments adopted by the legislative body.
The first amendment concerns the introduction of a three-year ban on lawyers who have held positions in the internal commissions of the Bar Association from reoccupying these positions, in order to prevent influence and ensure the rotation of personnel.
At the same time, the second amendment concerns the inclusion of representatives appointed by the minister of justice, as well as representatives of academic circles or civil society in the licensing and disciplinary commissions of the Bar Association, in order to enhance objectivity.
