Prime Minister announces targeted wage increase for 2026 and new salary law
The government will raise the minimum wage and adjust the reference value used in calculating salaries, measures primarily aimed at supporting low-income employees. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu made the statement today. He noted that the government is working on a new salary law that will come into force next year.
According to the Prime Minister, the minimum wage will increase from 5,500 to 6,300 lei, and the reference value will be raised from 2,200 to 2,400 lei.
"These adjustments will contribute to a fairer distribution of incomes and reduce pressures on low-wage earners affected by price hikes in recent years," the official emphasized.
He also clarified the discussions in the public space regarding possible salary cuts in the public sector.
"Salaries will not be reduced. I only referred to a few positions in some agencies, where salary packages are exaggerated. We will correct these discrepancies, but we are not talking about salary cuts for teachers, doctors, police officers, or civil servants," the official underlined.
At the same time, the government confirms that pensions will be indexed by 6% in April.
"It's little, but these are the realities," the Prime Minister noted, explaining that the indexation reflects the budgetary possibilities and current economic developments.
Authorities state that the new measures will contribute to a clearer, fairer, and more sustainable salary system, with details of the new salary law to be presented in the coming months.
The government examined and approved today the draft state budget for 2026, a document that Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu described as a "budget of responsible investments," built on the basis of positive economic developments in recent months and aimed at modernizing the country, supporting the economy, and protecting vulnerable categories.
The draft is to be submitted to Parliament for examination and adoption by the end of the year.
