Moldovan parliament speaker condemns vandalism of gravestones at Jewish Cemetery
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has strongly condemned the vandalism of gravestones at the Jewish Cemetery from Chisinau. He described the incident as a 'barbaric provocation' and a possible act of sabotage aimed at destabilizing society.
’’This is a barbaric provocation by individuals trying to create tensions in society. I do not rule out that this is an act of sabotage, part of broader efforts to destabilize, orchestrated by the Kremlin in,’’ Grosu wrote in a post.
The speaker urged law enforcement institutions to act promptly: “I urge law enforcement institutions to identify and hold accountable, as soon as possible, those who committed this barbaric act,’’ Grosu added.
He expressed solidarity with the Jewish community of Moldova, emphasizing that such acts of vandalism had no place in a democratic society.
More than 50 graves were destroyed and vandalized at the Jewish Cemetery in Chisinau. The police have opened a criminal file for vandalism and are searching for the perpetrators.
The Criminal Code provides for such offenses a fine of up to 52,500 lei and imprisonment of up to three years.
