Imported medicines dominate Moldova's market; most medication brought from EU
Imported medicines continue to dominate the market of Moldova, accounting for about 93 per cent in terms of value and 85 per cent in volume (boxes). Local medicines represent about 7 per cent in value and 15 per cent in volume, maintaining a positive quantitative trend, which confirms the gradual strengthening of local production. The data is contained in the report on the evolution of the pharmaceutical market of Moldova for the first nine months of 2025, presented by the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (AMDM).
The main sources of medicines’ imports are countries from the European Union, such as Germany, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary and Turkey, known for a developed pharmaceutical industry.
According to the report, during January–September 2025, the total pharmaceutical market of Moldova recorded a slight increase in value, of approximately 5.5 per cent, reaching 204.4 million euros. At the same time, its volume increased by 4.6 per cent, reaching the level of 74.51 million boxes.
The document also shows that the pharmaceutical market is correlated with the adjustments to the list of compensated medicines, managed by the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM), which determines the evolution of both imports and local production, by directing demand toward products included in the compensation system.
The report on the evolution of the pharmaceutical market of Moldova for the first nine months of 2025 provides an updated picture of the sector’s trends, based on data collected from authorized economic operators and analyzed in comparison to the similar period of the previous year.
