Road accidents to be recorded, analyzed in modernized system in Moldova

The Government of the Republic of Moldova

The process of collecting, storing and analyzing data on road accidents in Moldova will become more efficient. The government has approved the Concept of the information system, State Register of Road Accidents, and the Regulation on its maintenance.

The system will facilitate cooperation between institutions – the police, medical institutions, courts, transport authorities and insurance companies.

At the same time, the data collected on road accidents, the vehicles involved and the persons affected will help to better understand the causes of accidents and to identify high‑risk areas. In addition, the information included in the Register will contribute to the development of more effective public policies in the field of road safety, with the aim of reducing the number of accidents.

Another benefit is alignment with European Union standards on recording road accidents. Thus, Moldova will be able to report comparable data at the European level and will strengthen international cooperation in the field of road safety.

The system will also include clear rules on personal data protection, access to information and cybersecurity. Data will be processed only under the conditions provided by law, and their transfer to third parties will be carried out in compliance with information protection requirements.

In the past year, Moldova has recorded the lowest accident rate in the last nine years, which shows that monitoring measures, such as video cameras and stricter sanctions, are having an effect. Although the number of accidents and road deaths has decreased, it is still necessary to continue applying such measures: the EU average is about 43–45 deaths per 1 million inhabitants, while in Moldova it is 77–80.
