Tragedy in Moldovan capital: 85-year-old man dies after being crushed by tree felled by wind

An 85-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a tree that fell during strong wind gusts in a park in the Rascani district of the Chisinau municipality.

According to the Police, law-enforcement officers were notified about the incident that occurred earlier today. Once on the scene, they preliminarily determined that the tree had fallen because of the strong wind, striking the victim.

The man was taken in an unconscious state by a medical team and rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he later died from the injuries he sustained.

Police officers are documenting the case and taking measures to establish all circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

A 66-year-old woman was transported to hospital after being hit by an advertising billboard that was torn down by the strong wind. The incident took place in the Centru district of Chisinau.

A six-year-old child was transported in serious condition to the hospital after a tree felled by the strong wind had collapsed on him. The minor was taken over by a medical crew and rushed to the hospital and his condition is serious, according to preliminary information.

Authorities are urging the population to exercise maximum caution in the context of the Orange Code warning for strong winds, which is currently affecting the capital and more regions of the country.

The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued an Orange Code warning for strong winds for April 26, 2026. According to forecasts, between 10:00 and 21:00, large areas will experience intensified northwesterly winds, with gusts of up to 19–24 m/s, and locally even up to 26 m/s.

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) warns the population about the increased risks of vegetation fires, falling trees and other dangerous situations and issued a set of recommendations for preventing incidents. Authorities call on citizens to act responsibly and follow safety measures.
