Red Code of reduced water flow on many rivers of Moldova

The Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring Authority has issued yellow, orange and red hydrological warnings. Reduced water flow will persist between July 29–31 on the Dniester and Prut rivers, as well as on most small rivers of Moldova.

According to the institution, a yellow code is in force on the Dniester River between Naslavcea and Dubasari, where the water discharge represents 35–40 per cent of the multiannual monthly average values. On the Dubasari–Tudora sector, an orange code is in effect, with water flow estimated at 25–30 per cent of the multiannual average.

On the Prut River, the yellow code is valid on the Criva–Ungheni sector, where discharge stands between 30 and 40 per cent of the multiannual monthly averages, while between Ungheni and Branza an orange code has been issued, with water flow at 25–30 per cent of the characteristic average for the period.

Warnings have also been issued for small rivers. The yellow code applies to the Raut and Bâc rivers, where water flow is around 35 per cent of the multiannual monthly averages. The orange code is in force for the Ciulucul Mic and Ichel rivers, where discharge has dropped to 30 per cent or less of the multiannual average.

The highest warning level, the red code, has been issued for the Vilia, Draghiste, Cubolta, Cainar, and Botna rivers, where water flow represents only about 10 per cent of the multiannual monthly averages.

Authorities are urging businesses and the population to use water resources rationally and note that the warning and the map of the affected areas will be updated according to the evolution of the hydrological situation.

The government today established, for a period of 30 days, a state of alert in the energy sector and a hydrological state of alert, in order to prevent risks to the country’s fuel and water supply. The decisions were taken during an extraordinary meeting of the cabinet of ministers.
