The government has approved the launch of negotiations with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to finance the Moldova – Sustainable Water Supply Project.

The project envisages investments of approximately 130 million euro, from grants and loans provided by the EBRD and the European Union, through the Reform and Growth Facility for Moldova.

The funds will be used to rehabilitate two centralized irrigation systems and to expand irrigated areas by about 6,900 hectares. The capacities of the responsible institutions and of the water users’ associations for irrigation will also be strengthened.

The investments will provide farmers with better access to reliable water sources, will help enhance the productivity and competitiveness of agriculture and will support the agricultural sector in better adapting to the effects of climate change.
