VIDEO // Moldovan firefighters extinguish new forest fire nearby Thessaloniki

Firefighters from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) of Moldova, deployed to Greece, have extinguished a new forest fire that broke out near the locality of Pilea, south of the city of Thessaloniki. The intervention took place as part of the Pre-Positioning mission carried out through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

According to IGSU, the intervention request was received in the evening of July 26, at 17:16. Immediately after the alert, the IGSU team was mobilized and dispatched to the affected area, located approximately 12 kilometers from the operational base.

The mission involved 12 Moldovan firefighters with four intervention vehicles. Upon the teams’ arrival, the fire was spreading with high intensity, driven by high temperatures and strong winds, with a risk of the flames spreading toward nearby residential areas.

Rescuers from Moldova intervened alongside their colleagues from Greece, being assigned to more sectors to fight active hotspots. They carried out actions to locate and extinguish the fire, limit the spread of the flames, cool affected areas, and protect homes and communities in the risk zone.

As a result of the combined efforts of Moldovan and Greek firefighters, the fire was extinguished, preventing its spread to other populated areas. The intervention operation lasted for more than four hours.

IGSU firefighters are taking part, from July 14 to August 1, 2026, in the Pre-Positioning mission in Greece, organized under the auspices of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which aims to strengthen the capacity of response to forest fires.
