Social benefits for Moldovans in Italy
Citizens of the Republic of Moldova who have worked in Italy and paid social contributions will be able to receive social benefits. The agreement signed between the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic regarding social protection will come into effect on 1 September.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that depending on the contributions paid, Moldovan citizens can benefit from the following rights: retirement pension; survivor's pension (in case of the death of a family member); disability pension; allowances in case of work accidents or occupational diseases.
Work periods completed both in the Republic of Moldova and in Italy will be combined. Thus, the years worked in both countries will be accumulated to determine if the person has the right to a pension.
The pension application can be submitted both in the Republic of Moldova and in Italy.
In September and October 2025, the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Rome and the consulates in Milan and Padua will organize public information sessions for Moldovan citizens in Italy, with the participation of specialists from the National Social Insurance House.
Until 2022, over 271,000 Moldovan citizens contributed to the Italian pension system. Authorities estimate that by 2034, about 25,000 people will benefit from pensions from Italy.
