USMF 'Nicolae Testemițanu' ranks second nationally in Webometrics

The State University of Medicine and Pharmacy 'Nicolae Testemițanu' remains among the top-rated higher education institutions in the country, according to the Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics), July 2025 edition.

After holding the top national position for three consecutive years, USMF 'Nicolae Testemițanu' ranks second among higher education institutions in the country in the current edition of the rankings and 4,497th worldwide among about 32,000 universities.

The rector of the institution, Emil Ceban, highlighted that it is an achievement for USMF 'Nicolae Testemițanu' to have held the national leader position in the Webometrics ranking from July 2022 until July this year, given that it is an institution that covers a single field - health.

'It is natural for this ranking to change, considering that the Ministry of Education and Research is investing, and all universities strive for continuous development. Also, the present ranking reflects the results of higher education reforms in recent years regarding the absorption of research institutes by some universities, enhancing their visibility. What is certain is that we have a common goal: to modernize higher education in the Republic of Moldova and align it with European standards,' said Emil Ceban.

The ranking is based on both webometric and bibliometric indicators, collected from reliable sources such as Majestic, OpenAlex and Scimago-Scopus. Web data is collected in the first days of July, while bibliometric information covers the period 2020-2024. Web indicators are used as indirect indicators to comprehensively assess the university's overall performance, considering its activities, outputs, relevance and impact.

The Ranking Web of Universities is published twice a year and currently analyzes about 32,000 higher education institutions from over 200 countries based on three indicators: 50% - Visibility (impact of web content) - the total number of external links the institution's web domain receives from third parties (source - MAJESTIC); 40% - Excellence - the number of scientific articles among the top 10% most cited internationally, published in high-impact journals in the top 27 disciplines, according to data of 2020-2024 (source - SCIMAGO), and 10% represents Openness - the total number of citations of the university's researchers recorded in 2020-2024 (source - OPENALEX).

Launched in 2004 by the Cybermetrics Lab in Spain (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC), the Ranking Web of Universities is a classification system for universities worldwide, aiming to motivate both institutions and researchers to consistently and equitably promote their activities online. The main objective of the Webometrics ranking is to promote open access to the knowledge generated by higher education institutions. The best strategy to improve a top position is to increase the quantity and quality of web content.
