PHOTO // Road to Tipova cave monastery of Moldova becomes more accessible: renovation works historic stairs start

Visitors to the Tipova-Saharna Museum Complex will benefit from safer access to the Cave Monastery, after the stairway redevelopment project entered its implementation phase. The works are being carried out under the Confidence Building Measures Programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova.

The project aims to protect and valorize the cultural heritage of the Tipova-Saharna Museum Complex, a branch of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, by improving access to one of the most important historical and spiritual monuments of Moldova.

According to the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, the interventions will respect the monument’s authenticity and preserve the present historical traces. The original stairs, built by monks at the beginning of the 19th century from broken stone, represent a heritage element that illustrates how access to cave churches was arranged.

Since the stone used initially can no longer be identified and procured under similar conditions, complete restoration with the original materials was not possible. The chosen solution provides for the installation of solid oak wood sections, a durable material that blends harmoniously into the natural landscape of the reserve.

The new arrangement will ensure both safe access for visitors and the preservation in plain sight of authentic sections of the old stone stairs, which can be admired as witnesses to the more than two-hundred-year history of the cave monastery.

The Tipova-Saharna Museum Complex is one of the most valuable cultural and natural heritage sites of Moldova, attracting thousands of tourists and pilgrims from the country and abroad every year.
