Searches conducted in more settlements of Moldova in case concerning illegal financing of parties through cryptocurrencies
Officers of the National Anticorruption Center (CNA), together with prosecutors from the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA), today are carrying out approximately 20 searches in more several localities of Moldova, as part of a criminal case concerning the illegal financing of political parties and money laundering through virtual assets.
According to the CNA, investigators have documented a scheme in which virtual assets originating abroad were allegedly used to illegally finance certain political parties. The scheme is believed to have operated in more stages, with the cryptocurrencies initially collected in a central electronic wallet directly controlled by the group’s treasurer.
Subsequently, the virtual assets were allegedly transferred to intermediaries, whose role was to convert them into Moldovan lei. The cash got was divided into smaller amounts and distributed through couriers, so that it could be clandestinely delivered to the network’s final beneficiaries.
During the searches, law enforcement officers seized mobile phones connected to applications used to manage virtual asset accounts, devices meant for storing the private keys of crypto wallets, as well as funds whose legal origin, according to investigators, has not been established.
The operation carried out today represents a continuation of investigations launched in the autumn of 2025, on the period preceding the parliamentary elections of September 28, 2025.
As part of those investigations, more decision-makers, members and supporters of political parties affiliated with a criminal group were detained on suspicion of attempting to influence the election through financing from sources prohibited by law.
