Energy Minister: Romania not only helped us withstand energy shocks, but was also catalyst for our structural transformation

Romania not only helped us withstand energy shocks, but was also a catalyst for our structural transformation. Interconnections such as Vulcănești–Chișinău, Bălți–Suceava, or Strășeni–Gutinaș are strategic projects for the entire region. Minister of Energy of the Republic of Moldova Dorin Junghietu made the statements today.  He participated alongside Minister of Energy of Romania Sebastian Burduja in the opening of ENERGY EXPO 2025, an international event taking place in Bucharest on May 22-24.

Junghietu presented the vision and progress of the Republic of Moldova in the energy sector, highlighting the country's strategic priorities: strengthening energy independence, diversifying supply sources, and accelerating the transition to green energy.

“The Republic of Moldova has not consumed Russian natural gas on the right bank of the Dniester since November 2022. This was a turning point, where we realized that energy security is inseparable from national security. Since then, we have diversified sources, invested in infrastructure, and accelerated integration into the European energy market,” said Junghietu.

The minister highlighted the essential role of Romania in supporting Moldova during this critical stage, mentioning the substantial contributions of the Romanian partner - from gas and electricity deliveries to interconnection with ENTSO-E network and the development of cross-border infrastructure.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the Republic of Moldova is making significant progress in developing renewable energy, with over 650 MW installed - an eightfold increase from four years ago. Ongoing tenders will generate investments of over 190 million euros, including in storage capacities, essential for network stability.

ENERGY EXPO 2025 brought together government leaders, experts, and key industry players to discuss the energy future of the region, focusing on Romania's diverse energy mix, its strategic position, and its central role in European energy security.
