Livestock sector in Moldova on rise: record subsidies for animal farmers and new financing opportunities

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) announced today record results from the latest subsidy call for sheep and goat farmers, marked by a significant increase in the number of applications and requested amounts. Following this success, the ministry is launching a new support program for cattle farmers and milk producers, aiming to strengthen the development of the livestock sector.

The direct payment call, held between June 23 and August 8, 2025, provided financial support for farm modernization and ensuring optimal animal maintenance conditions. According to the Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture (AIPA), farmer interest exceeded expectations.

“We have 351 applications submitted, 16% more compared to the same period in 2023; 52 million lei requested, an increase of 21%; 212 applications from sheep farmers for over 46,000 animals; 139 applications from goat farmers for over 17,000 animals. These figures demonstrate clear sector development and increased farmer confidence in support measures,” stated Diana Coșalić, interim director of AIPA.

AIPA's head estimated that farmers are not only modernizing their operations but also expanding their livestock.

“Even though the call recently ended, AIPA has already started disbursing funds: 10 million lei have reached the farmers' accounts, and the remaining payments will be made in the next two weeks,” mentioned Diana Coșalić.

MAIA is launching a new subsidy call on August 15, which includes direct payments per animal for heifers (young female cattle); direct payments per kilogram of product for cow, sheep, and goat milk delivered to processors or processed in their own authorized units.

Eligible farmers must have authorized operations, with identified and insured animals. For milk subsidies per kilogram, presenting documents confirming delivery to processors is mandatory.

Applications must be submitted by 26 September 2025 for subsidies for invoiced milk in the first semester; by 17 October 2025 for direct payments per animal for heifers.

The Ministry of Agriculture urges all producers in the targeted sectors to prepare their documentation and submit applications within the established deadlines to benefit from the available financial support.
