Customs Service announces new electronic notification requirements for economic operators transiting Austria
Economic operators involved in transit operations are being warned about the introduction of new declaration requirements for goods shipments crossing the border between Austria and Switzerland, within the digital Smart Border Austria system.
According to the Customs Service, starting from 1 January 2026, the prior electronic notification regarding transit must be submitted before presenting at the customs office of transit. The Austrian authorities have established a transition period until 30 April 2026, after which failure to comply with the procedure may lead to a refusal to continue the transit until the established requirements are met.
The implementation of this mechanism aims to digitalize processes, reduce waiting times at the border, and streamline customs controls, including through the use of automated systems for identifying means of transport.
To avoid delays and possible blockages in the performance of transit operations, the Customs Service recommends that economic operators: familiarize themselves in advance with the new requirements, ensure the correct and complete submission of electronic notifications, and inform carriers and personnel involved in the logistics chain about the applicable obligations.
