Moldova aligns with global standards: joining Agroecology Coalition opens path toward modern and resilient agriculture

In a strategic move aimed at revolutionizing the way agriculture is practiced in the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) has announced the country’s accession to the Agroecology Coalition. This international platform represents the highest forum for cooperation between governments, academia and global organizations for the promotion of sustainable agrifood systems.

“Accession is not just a symbolic act, but direct access to cutting-edge informational and financial resources. In the context in which climate change – prolonged droughts and soil degradation – is hitting Moldovan crops increasingly hard, agroecology brings practical solutions to make agriculture profitable and safe,” MAIA explains.

Main benefits of the partnership:

  • International cooperation: Moldova joins an elite network where experiences are shared on climate risk management and the adaptation of crops to new environmental conditions.
  • Access to science: Collaboration with the international academic community will allow the implementation of cultivation techniques that regenerate the soil without relying exclusively on expensive chemical fertilizers.
  • Modern public policies: The Government will receive assistance in designing subsidies and support programs that encourage farmers to adopt nature-friendly practices.
  • Resilience and sustainability: The ultimate goal is to create production systems that can withstand economic and climatic shocks, ensuring stable incomes for farmers.

Agroecology: A solution for Moldova’s soils

Agroecology is based on principles that work with nature, not against it. For Moldova, this means increased attention to conserving water in the soil, using biodiversity for pest control, and restoring the famous Moldovan chernozem, which has suffered in recent decades due to intensive exploitation.

A clear signal to external markets

Alignment with environmental and climate objectives makes Moldovan products more attractive on international markets, where consumers are increasingly seeking food produced in a sustainable and responsible way.

The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that the transition to ecological and resilient agriculture is the only way for our villages to remain prosperous in the face of the challenges of the 21st century.
