Romania’s PM in Chisinau says European integration of Moldova strategic priority for Romania

The European integration of Moldova represents a strategic priority for Romania, which will continue to actively support Moldova’s European path and provide technical expertise to align its legislation with the acquis communautaire. Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu today made statements to this effect in Chisinau, during a joint conference with the Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.

The Romanian official congratulated the Moldovan authorities on the results achieved in the European integration process and reaffirmed Bucharest’s support for advancing accession negotiations with the European Union.

“The European integration of Moldova is clearly a strategic priority for Romania. Moldova’s place, without a doubt, is in the European Union,” Luca Niculescu said.

The Romanian prime minister emphasized that Romania supported the opening of the remaining two negotiation clusters, expressing hope that this would happen by the end of the year.

“I assure you once again, Mr. Prime Minister, that Romania will continue to be Moldova’s most vocal supporter at the European level,” the Romanian official said.

According to him, Bucharest will intensify its support for Moldova, by providing technical expertise and involving Romanian specialists, who will contribute to aligning national legislation with the European Union’s one.

Another topic discussed was the security of Moldova’s citizens, in the context of the threats and pressure exerted by the Russian Federation. Luca Niculescu noted that these challenges constantly test the response capacity and resilience of both countries.

At the end of the meeting, the Romanian prime minister thanked his Moldovan counterpart for the visit and for the dialogue held between the two government teams, inviting him to Bucharest to continue the strategic discussions.

Luca Niculescu is making his first official foreign visit since taking office as prime minister of Romania. The government led by him was sworn in on October 20, 2026. The visit takes place at an invitation by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and accelerate joint projects.
