On 27 October 2026, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri met with State Secretary for European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia Andreja Metelko-Zgombić, who was on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova. The discussions focused on current developments in the Transnistrian settlement process, the dynamics of the dialogue between Chișinău and Tiraspol, as well as the measures undertaken by the national authorities to bring the two banks of the Dniester closer together.

In this context, Chișinău’s efforts to advance sectoral reintegration policies were highlighted. These policies aim to gradually integrate the Transnistrian region into unified national frameworks, so that the regulatory framework of the Republic of Moldova is applied throughout the country. The measures undertaken in this regard include extending the tax regime concerning the application of VAT and excise duties to goods imported by economic operators from the region, in order to ensure uniform tax treatment within the national tax system.

The dialogue also addressed the Convergence Fund, an additional support instrument intended to facilitate the country’s gradual reintegration process, which is expected to become operational at the beginning of 2027. In this regard, the relevance of drawing on Croatia’s best practices in the field of peaceful reintegration, including through the use of convergence instruments was emphasized.

Another topic discussed was the alarming situation concerning respect for human rights in the Transnistrian region, with the importance of assistance from international partners in supporting the efforts of the constitutional authorities to improve the situation being emphasized.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed appreciation to the Croatian side for its consistent support to the Republic of Moldova in promoting a peaceful and lasting settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, with respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
