Moldova strengthens relations with Cyprus: Honorary Consulate inaugurated in Nicosia

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi alongside his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, representatives of the diplomatic staff and business community, as well as members of the Moldovan diaspora.
The Honorary Consulate will be headed by Ioannis Georgoulas. The head of Moldova’s diplomacy thanked him for his involvement in opening the representation and for his willingness to promote the interests of the Republic of Moldova in Cyprus.
The minister expressed confidence that the new consular office would contribute to intensifying dialogue between the two states, developing contacts between citizens, and identifying new economic opportunities, including in trade and investment.
“We are pleased to expand the presence of the Republic of Moldova in Cyprus through the inauguration of the Honorary Consulate. We are grateful to Mr. Ioannis Georgoulas for taking on this role and are confident that he will leverage his connections to bring our countries closer together. There are opportunities to develop trade and attract more investment to the Republic of Moldova,” said Mihai Popșoi.
Cyprus’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos welcomed the appointment of Ioannis Georgoulas as honorary consul and highlighted the good relations between the two countries, including Cyprus’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s European path.
“The inauguration of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Moldova in Cyprus represents an important step in strengthening bilateral cooperation. I am pleased that we have the opportunity to create new areas of cooperation. Congratulations on this achievement! We look forward to working alongside Mr. Georgoulas to promote the interests of the Republic of Moldova,” the Cypriot official said.
Andrei Popov, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Greece, concurrently accredited to Cyprus wished the new honorary consul success, expressing his conviction that his business experience and contacts in Cyprus would contribute to developing relations between the two states.
For his part, Ioannis Georgoulas expressed his commitment to boosting Moldovan-Cypriot cooperation and contributing to a better understanding of the Republic of Moldova in Cyprus.
The inauguration ceremony was followed by a reception dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Moldova. Mihai Popșoi also spoke with Moldovan citizens living in Cyprus about the authorities’ efforts to support them, regardless of the country in which they reside.
The head of Moldova’s diplomacy noted that the Moldovan authorities are discussing with the Cypriot side the possibility of negotiating agreements on social security, the mutual recognition of driving licences, and the recognition of academic qualifications.
