Moldova to build first electrified railway with European gauge on Chisinau–Ungheni segment
Moldova is taking a historic step in modernizing its railway infrastructure, by constructing the first electrified railway with a European gauge on the Chisinau–Ungheni segment. The project will ensure direct connection to the modern European railway network.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR), the investment will bring significant long-term benefits.
“This means faster and safer travel for passengers, in modern comfort conditions; stimulating trade and cross-border connectivity by facilitating freight transport to the European Union; integrating Moldova into the EU's core TEN-T network, which will boost economic competitiveness and attractiveness for investment,” said MIDR.
The pre-feasibility study of the project is carried out with the support of the Eastern Partnership Investment Connectivity Facility (EPIC), an initiative that contributes to the development of sustainable infrastructure and the expansion of the European transport network.
“The new Chișinău–Ungheni line will represent not only a technical innovation for the national railway infrastructure, but also a strategic project that aligns Moldova with European transport standards. Through this investment, the country will have a direct and efficient link with the EU member states, strengthening both the mobility of citizens and long-term economic prospects,” the Ministry of Infrastructure added.
