Energy Minister: Gas prices in Moldova not highest in Europe

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu says that Moldova does not have the highest gas prices in Europe, after information emerged in the public domain suggesting that the country ranked first in this regard. The official presented Eurostat data for the second half of 2025, which include all taxes for household consumers.

According to Eurostat data, the price of gas for household consumers in Moldova was 9.47 euro cents/kWh, while the European Union average stood at 12.28 euro cents/kWh. Thus, Moldova’s figure is approximately 23% below the EU average. Eurostat confirms the average of 12.28 euro cents/kWh for households in the EU in the second half of 2025 and specifies that its comparative data also include Moldova.

Dorin Junghietu says that, among the 30 European countries included in the comparison presented by the Ministry of Energy, Moldova ranks 17th, while prices are higher in 13 countries. The states mentioned include Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. In the case of Sweden, Eurostat indicates a price of 20.92 euro cents/kWh in the second half of 2025, the highest level among EU member states.

The Energy Minister said that such comparisons must use the same period, the same category of consumers and the same methodology. Eurostat specifies that household prices include duties, taxes and VAT, while the data are presented according to consumption categories. For Moldova, the statistics are provided by the National Statistics Bureau.

“For citizens, the gas price is and remains an important issue. We do not ignore the impact of bills on households or our responsibility to keep energy as affordable as possible. But precisely because we are discussing such a sensitive issue, comparisons must be made correctly, and the information presented publicly must correspond to the data,” Dorin Junghietu said.

The Ministry of Energy has made available on its website a gas price comparison tool for households, through which consumers can consult the data used for European comparisons.

The National Agency for Energy Regulation recently approved new natural gas tariffs for final consumers. Accordingly, citizens will pay a tariff of 24.20 lei per cubic metre of natural gas, excluding VAT, compared with the current price of 18.79 lei, excluding VAT, representing an increase of 5.41 lei. VAT of 8% is added to the tariff established by ANRE.
