Moldovan citizens might pay less for gas; energy minister says there is opportunity to cut tariff

Natural gas tariffs might decrease. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu has made statements to this effect. He emphasized that the analysis of the regional market showed that there is an opportunity for the tariff paid by consumers to be cut, but the calculations and the final decision are to be approved by the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE).

“ANRE evaluates the opportunity and necessity of adjusting tariffs. We did not carry out an analysis; we monitored the market. The current purchase prices are below the average price that was included in the tariff last year,” said Dorin Junghietu at the programme, At 360 Degrees, on the public radio station.

The energy minister noted that the Energocom company, which has taken over the public service obligation and began supplying gas to citizens as of 1 September 2025, has submitted to ANRE the figures regarding basic expenses and is to present this month the data on the average purchase cost of natural gas. Based on this information, ANRE will assess the opportunity to adjust the tariff, Dorin Junghietu said.

“Whether it will be 0.5 lei, 1 leu or 2 lei, ANRE will give its opinion on that. But it is true that trends on the gas market are declining, because there is a surplus of gas. At the moment, the trends or prices remain relatively stable, and once ANRE finalizes its calculations, there is this opportunity to reduce the tariff,” concluded the energy minister.

The acting general director of Energocom stock company, Eugeniu Buzatu, has recently said that the price of natural gas for Moldova’s consumers could might in 2026. According to the cited source, the final tariffs will be set by ANRE at the end of January and will apply also in the next cold season.

The latest change in natural gas tariffs paid by final consumers was approved at the end of November 2024. Presently, citizens pay 15.50 lei (excluding value added tax) for one cubic meter of gas.

Energocom in mid-September informed that the average purchase price for the 2025–2026 gas year was forecast at around 38.5 EUR/MWh (~410 EUR/1000 m3), an amount that also includes the transport cost to the Moldova virtual trading point (VTP).
