Parliament speaker warns people who defy authorities of Moldova may lose citizenship

Those who defy the authorities of Moldova may lose their citizenship. The warning comes on behalf of Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, in the context of the recent presidential decree withdrawing the citizenship of nine people from the left bank of the Dniester, suspected of actions aimed at undermining the state.

Grosu specified that the measure targets not only officials who participate in illegal activities, but also individuals who enlist in the army of the Russian Federation or who violate human rights by being involved in institutions of coercion and intimidation.

“As citizens of the Republic of Moldova, they are accountable to the Constitution, not to the Kremlin and the separatist authorities. Those who confuse these things risk losing their citizenship. The lesson must be learned,” Igor Grosu said.

The speaker emphasized that the process of European integration was seen as beneficial by citizens from the left bank of the Dniester, who are increasingly coming to the right bank, because of the precarious economic situation in the separatist region.

“I want to ask them: between having gas every day, but more expensive, and not having it at all, and wondering whether tomorrow you will be able to heat the school, the kindergarten or your home – this is the impact of the policies of the Russian Federation,” Grosu added.

President Maia Sandu has recently revoked the citizenship of Moldova for nine former officials from the left bank of the Dniester. The decision targeted individuals involved in organizing the so-called electoral processes and former heads of the self-proclaimed ministries, as well as deputies in the so-called Supreme Soviet.
