New U.S. commercial tariffs on imports: Economic Development Ministry comes up with clarifications for exporters from Moldova

The Economic Development and Digitalization Ministry (MDED) has announced that, starting from February 24, 2026, the 25-per cent customs duty would no longer be applied to imports of products originating from Moldova into the territory of the United States, but a 10-per cent customs surcharge will be levied.

Thus, the 25-per cent duty previously applied to Moldovan goods imported into the U.S. has been cancelled following the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States of America of February 20. 2026. As a result, starting February 24, the U.S. has introduced a temporary 10-per cent surcharge on all imports of goods, in accordance with U.S. trade legislation.

MDED emphasized that the current measure was general and temporary in nature, being applied uniformly to all U.S. trading partners, without specifically targeting Moldova or certain Moldovan-origin products. Under the U.S. legal framework, the maximum period for applying this measure is 150 days.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugeniu Osmochescu said that the authorities of Moldova were monitoring developments and maintaining active dialogue with U.S. partners and the business community, in order to ensure accurate information and provide the necessary support to economic operators.

At the same time, MDED underlined that Moldova reaffirmed its interest in deepening economic relations with the United States and in maintaining a predictable, balanced and constructive framework for international trade.

According to statistics data, in 2025, the bilateral trade amounted to 244.9 million dollars, recording an increase of 8.6 per cent compared to the year before.
