Prime Minister about situation in energy sector

The Republic of Moldova has sufficient energy resources, and the authorities are closely monitoring the situation in the field, in the context of developments in the Middle East. The clarifications were made by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu at the beginning of today’s Cabinet meeting.

The official stressed that the analyses carried out at this stage show that it is not necessary to move to another level of emergency, after the Republic of Moldova instituted, last week, a state of alert in the energy sector.

“A week ago, we declared a state of alert, and we are carefully monitoring the situation. We still consider that it is not necessary to move to another level of emergency. We have sufficient resources and possibilities to keep the situation under control,” stated Alexandru Munteanu.

The official underlined that the authorities are following the evolution of global fuel prices, which are characterized by extreme volatility, and that the Republic of Moldova is directly affected, being dependent on imports.

“The latest trends are positive. It is a global situation. But we must be aware that Moldova is not isolated from the rest of the world. We make decisions based on concrete data,” the Prime Minister noted.

Alexandru Munteanu mentioned that statistical data show that “fuel prices in our country are the lowest in the region.”

“There is even information that drivers come here from neighboring countries to refuel. We must analyze this situation. From my experience, any restriction leads to speculative operations, and this is not good, because consumers suffer, economic agents suffer, the state loses, and only speculators earn money that is not justified,” the Prime Minister stated.

The Prime Minister said that the Republic of Moldova has sufficient reserves of petroleum products, namely gasoline for 23 days and diesel for about two weeks, and that deliveries are continuing. At the same time, Alexandru Munteanu added that today the Government will propose a set of emergency measures to help economic agents in the current situation, especially farmers.

In the Republic of Moldova, a nationwide state of alert has been declared in the energy sector for a period of 60 days, starting from March 4. Munteanu specified that this is a preventive measure aimed at protecting the country’s energy security.
