Next steps in EU accession process and regional security developments discussed by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi with Kaja Kallas

The next steps in our country’s accession process to the European Union and security developments in the region were discussed during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas.

The EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, praised the progress made by the Republic of Moldova on its European path and reiterated support for strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defence, with a view to increasing the state’s resilience and the safety of its citizens.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi thanked the EU for its contribution to strengthening our country’s resilience through the implementation of the Security and Defence Partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, signed on 21 May 2024. The Republic of Moldova is the first country to have concluded such a partnership with the EU, and this model of cooperation has since been applied in relations with eight other states. At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to aligning itself with the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and stressed that this reflects our country’s firm attachment to European values and the Union’s common positions.

“European Union support helps us become stronger and more resilient in the face of current challenges and contributes to maintaining the pace of the integration process. Our country deserves its place in the European family and is gradually strengthening its capacities in order to contribute actively to European security. Together with our partners, we are building a safer and more prosperous Moldova,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

At the same time, Popșoi emphasized the importance of the assistance provided through the European Peace Facility for the modernization of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova, including with regard to increasing the safety of the airspace. In this context, our country’s interest in continuing to benefit from EU support in the coming years was reiterated.

Popșoi is paying a working visit to Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium, from 10–11 March. The agenda includes meetings with officials of the European Union and NATO.
