VIDEO // 3.2 billion lei to be invested in road rehabilitation
3.2 billion lei will be invested this year for the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and maintenance of roads and bridges in the Republic of Moldova. The funds will be used to modernize over 600 kilometers of local and regional roads. These figures were presented today by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who noted that this is the largest amount of money ever allocated in the Republic of Moldova for road infrastructure in one year.
“We promised that we would invest in infrastructure and European roads across the country. With care for all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, we are allocating an unprecedented budget this year for the roads of Moldova. A budget through which, by 2025, we will construct and modernize more than 600 kilometers of local and regional roads. A total of 3.2 billion lei will be invested just this year for the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and maintenance of roads and bridges. Of this money: 2.7 billion lei through the Road Fund for regional roads and 500 million lei have been included additionally in the PLUS Budget for local roads. It is the largest amount of money ever allocated in the Republic of Moldova for road infrastructure in one year,” said Recean today.
The Prime Minister pointed out that this year, the Road Fund has been supplemented with 1 billion lei, reaching 2.7 billion.
“From these funds, we will repair over 260 kilometers of regional roads connecting districts. Road sections will be rehabilitated in 31 administrative units, including in Chișinău, where we will reconstruct 6 kilometers between Brăila and Băcioi, an important segment that will help in the transit of goods in the southern bypass of the capital. Most of these roads have never been repaired since independence, and most of them never had asphalt cover,” he stressed.
Certain sectors of regional roads are already in progress or near completion. For example, the road from Bulboaca to Hârbovăț, the Sângerei - Rădoaia road, which is being paved for the first time, the Colibași - Vulcănești road, or the road segments from Leova to Leușeni.
“We all know how important quality roads are, both for ambulances, firefighters, policemen, and also for each of our vehicles. And we know how much money is needed to renew a road, too much for local budgets. For years, local communities have been asking for the rehabilitation of these roads. That's why the enormous investment we are making this year in regional roads connecting our communities is important,” he said.
Dorin Recean also provided some examples in this regard: 5 kilometers of road near the village of Slobozia Mare, known by every driver who has crossed the Giurgiulești border in recent years, 3 kilometers from Lozova to the M1 highway, Chișinău - Leușeni, a road that passes through the forest and offers a better alternative for those from Strășeni and Călărași who want to go to Romania via Leușeni. We will have another 5 kilometers of asphalt road contributing to exploiting the tourist potential of Vadul lui Rașcov area on Dniester in Șoldănești, said the Prime Minister.
He noted that all these projects must be completed this year, and directed the responsible institutions to monitor the quality and pace of work execution.
“It is a large volume of work. All responsible institutions will monitor the quality and pace of work execution. Contracted companies will have to mobilize and meet all deadlines,” said Dorin Recean.
In addition to the 2.7 billion lei from the Road Fund, another 500 million lei have been allocated through the +PLUS Budget for local roads. In this regard, 579 mayors from across the country have proposed specific repair projects for an important local road.
Recean assured that investments in road infrastructure will continue in the coming years, with resources being supplemented. Additionally, he stated that the road tax will not increase, and the necessary financial resources for road modernization will be provided, including with the support of development partners.
In the last three years, 766 km of roads have been renovated, three times more than in the previous ten years, statistical data shows.
Currently, major road rehabilitation projects are underway, financed with support from partners, European international financial institutions, such as Soroca-Otaci or Hâncești-Leușeni routes, or Hâncești-Leova-Cantemir routes, as well as bypass roads of Vulcănești and Slobozia Mare.
