Declaration supporting European path of Moldova signed in Bucharest
The foreign policy committees of the Moldovan and Romanian parliaments today signed a joint declaration supporting the initiation of negotiations for Moldova's accession to the European Union. The document was signed following a meeting of the two committees held in Bucharest.
The meeting was opened by the head of the Foreign Policy Committee of Romania’s parliament, Senator Titus Corlatean. The official highlighted the positive results achieved by Moldova in implementing reforms and the existence of necessary conditions for starting the negotiation process.
“The candidate status got by Moldova through hard work, with the support of Romania and its partners, represents a concrete step in continuing the negotiation process. However, things are not simple, in the context of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The European integration process is based on the merits of each candidate state. According to European Commission’s evaluations, Moldova is at the top; it is number one. Therefore, there are substantive arguments to justify the start of accession negotiations by the end of this year. That is why, we are sending an important signal to our European partners today. It is very important to adopt the common declaration text, in order to say these things, and for governments to possess additional momentum on behalf of us to continue to act in the appropriate direction,” said Titus Corlatean.
For her part, Moldova’s Deputy Parliament Speaker, the head of the commission for foreign policy Doina Gherman thanked the Romanian officials for their support of Moldova's process of joining the European Union.
“Each time we come to Bucharest we feel at home. Thank you for the initiative to sign this joint declaration of the Foreign Policy Committees of both parliaments. We have very little time until the end of the year, so it is necessary to consolidate efforts to convey the message of support for Moldova's European path. Last week, the report on the enlargement package for the year 2025 was presented. Moldova has managed, in 12 months, to achieve progress expected over a period of 30 months. Beyond the technical side, where indeed we have recorded very good progress, our society has proved, through parliamentary elections, that it wants to continue the European path. In the Constitution of Moldova, the European path is established as a strategic national objective, decided by the citizens in 2024 through a referendum, when they clearly said that Moldova's place is in the great European family,” emphasized Doina Gherman.
At the same time, the parliamentarians discussed advancing the European integration process as Moldova fulfills its assumed commitments, Romania's support for Moldova's European integration agenda and the European Union's support for Moldova.
The Moldovan parliamentary delegation is led by Deputy Parliament Speaker, the head of the commission for foreign policy Doina Gherman. The delegation also includes members of the Foreign Policy Commission: Adrian Balutel, Ion Groza, Mihail Druta and the head parliamentary group of friendship with Romania, the head of the juridical commission for appointments and immunities Veronica Rosca.
In Bucharest, the Moldovan parliamentary delegation will meet President of the Romanian Senate Mircea Abrudean, and Presidential Adviser for European Affairs, Valentin Naumescu.
The deputies will also visit the chapel of the Saint Sophia Church in Bucharest to pay their last respects to Ilie Ilascu.
