Moldova strengthens transport infrastructure with EU's support: faster travels, safer roads, stronger economic links

Moldova is making significant strides towards integrating into the European space by modernizing its road, rail and logistics infrastructure. New roads, upgraded railways and efficient logistics centers create opportunities for citizens and the business environment, opening new perspectives for the country's economic development.

These changes are supported by the European Union and its partners, through investments that connect Moldova to European transport standards. The initiatives are part of the Growth Plan for Moldova, the EU's 1.9 billion-euros-worth package, aimed at boosting the economy and supporting the integration process.

A strategic goal in this regard is Moldova’s inclusion in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) - the main European system of roads and railways. This integration is possible through EPIC - the Eastern Partnership Investment in Connectivity Facility, which provides expertise and technical assistance for the development of complex infrastructure projects. EPIC facilitates the transition from plans and studies to concrete projects, ready for financing and construction.

Launched by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the World Bank in early 2022, the EPIC initiative aims to strengthen connectivity between Eastern Partnership countries and the European Union.

Since its beginning, Moldova has actively got involved and become the main beneficiary in the region, confirming the country's commitment to building strong connections for a prosperous European future.

This involves strategic investments in major infrastructure projects: M3 Cimislia (bypass) - 38 million euros; M5 Criva–Balti - 120 million euros; R34 Hancesti–Leova–Cahul–Giurgiulesti - 57 million euros. Beyond construction works, the projects are based on European expertise. Through the EPIC Facility, funded by the European Union, planning, design, and alignment of processes to European standards are guaranteed. What do we achieve? Faster travel, safer roads, stronger economic links, summarizes the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development.
