It exports products of the machine building industry (tractors, cars, airplanes, machine tools, electrical and electronic equipment), fuels, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, chemicals, building materials, wood and wood materials, paper and others. It imports industrial equipment, textiles, agricultural products and consumer goods.

In 2018, Russia's gross domestic product amounted to 4,152 trillion dollars, ranking sixth in the world, and per capita - 28,957 dollars.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation were established on 6 April 1992.

In 2018, exports of Moldovan goods to Russia, compared to 2017, decreased by 14.1% - to 218.6 million dollars. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, deliveries of Russian products to Moldova in 2018 compared to the previous year increased by 26.1% to 720.8 million dollars.

At the same time, the share of Russia in Moldovan exports decreased from 10.5% to 8.08%, whereas imports increased from 11.83% to 12.51%. By the end of 2018, Russia ranked fourth among the largest Moldovan partners in terms of purchases of Moldovan products after Romania, Italy and Germany. At the same time, it ranks 2nd in the supply of products to the Republic of Moldova.

The negative trade balance of the Republic of Moldova with the Russian Federation in 2018 amounted to 502.2 million dollars, up by 1.6 times than in 2017. National Bureau of Statistics does not take into account the commercial and economic operations of Transnistrian companies.
