Moldova's Superior Council of Prosecutors appoints Alexandru Machidon for Prosecutor General's office

The members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) today appointed  Alexandru Machidon for the position of Prosecutor General. His candidacy will be put forward to President Maia Sandu for appointment to the office.

CSP today conducted the final interview, as part of the competition for the position of Prosecutor General. Current Interim Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon, who scored 8.86, and the Interim Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS) Victor Furtună, who scored 8.23, applied for the vacant position.

Alexandru Machidon presented the management concept of the Prosecutor General's Office (PG), so that the institution should represent a strong structure ensuring the smooth work of the prosecutor's office system.

“I have been active in the system for 17 years – of which 13 in leadership positions. Previously, I worked at PCCOCS and Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA), thus acquiring the necessary knowledge regarding the activity of prosecutors in the country. At present, we are in an intense process of implementing reforms, a period with multiple challenges. Therefore, I aim to build a modern, efficient and independent prosecutor's office. I want to continue the actions initiated during the interim period, referring to ensuring the independence of prosecutors in managing cases, ensuring institutional integrity, zero tolerance to corruption, continuous development of prosecutors' competencies and increasing expertise in investigating cases. At the same time, an important factor is the continuation of the modernization process of the prosecutor's office system, as well as good cooperation and coordination with key institutions in the justice system,” said Alexandru Machidon.

Machidon highlighted that, during his interim tenure as Prosecutor General, he had identified more gaps, including the lack of criminal investigation officers, lack of offices for territorial prosecutors and staff deficiencies in the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office. Thus, Alexandru Machidon said that he had initiated more necessary actions to improve the situation in this regard.

He also referred to the need to speed up the consideration of corruption and organized crime cases. Alexandru Machidon also said that the work in the prosecutor's office was incompatible with illicit enrichment.

“Any illegal actions by prosecutors must be documented. I spoke about the integrity of prosecutors and zero tolerance to acts of corruption. Moreover, to maintain prosecutors' integrity in the system, a competitive salary is needed, for which we have already approved the increase in the reference value in the salary payment process. Another factor would be ensuring modern and efficient working conditions and stimulating prosecutors who perform well. We must be aware that the independence of the prosecutor's office and its prosecutors is the foundation of the rule of law, which implies the separation of the prosecutor's activity from the political factor,” said Alexandru Machidon.

Alexandru Machidon has been serving as Interim Prosecutor General since late May 2025. As of June 10, 2024, he assured the interim position of deputy head of PCCOCS. In May 2023, Alexandru Machidon assured the interim position of head of the Orhei district Prosecutor's Office, and in 2017 he served as deputy head of Criuleni district Prosecutor's Office.

The competition for the position of Prosecutor General was launched in June, with the deadline for submitting applications being July 21. Candidates were evaluated based on clear criteria established by CSP, including professional education, integrity and personal qualities.

The position of head of the Prosecutor General's Office became vacant at the end of May, when Ion Munteanu was appointed as judge at the Supreme Court of Justice.
