Moldovan president says what is not allowed offline cannot be allowed online
President Maia Sandu today took part in the international conference titled, The Future of the ‘Marketplace of Ideas’ in the Context of the Rise of the Internet, Fake News and Artificial Intelligence: Challenges for Constitutional Courts.
In her speech, the head of state addressed new forms of interference in democratic processes, the risks of information manipulation and their impact on the integrity of electoral processes. In the context, the Moldovan president highlighted the essential role of constitutional courts in protecting fundamental rights and in ensuring respect for the freely expressed will of citizens.
Referring to the experience of Moldova, the head of state underlined that threats to democracy had become increasingly sophisticated, especially due to the development of digital technologies and the use of artificial intelligence for disinformation purposes.
"What is not allowed offline cannot be allowed online," said the head of state.
At the same time, the Moldovan president called for strengthening international cooperation and for increased vigilance in the face of new challenges to democracy.
