The modernization of Moldova, changes made with European support that have raised living standards in Ungheni district's localities, as well as the necessary actions in the coming period to advance towards EU membership and improve citizens' daily lives were discussed at a today's meeting between Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and mayors and representatives of the decentralized public services of the district.

In discussions, the PM referred to the complex agenda of necessary reforms for development and emphasized that, only through close cooperation, can we move Moldova forward, improve local public services and be prepared for membership as quickly as possible.

"Ungheni is a district in full development, with numerous infrastructure projects underway—from roads and street lighting to health and education services, as well as successful economic projects. We rely on collaboration with local administration, in order to implement these projects and to increase the capacity for funds’ absorption and projects’ implementation," said Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.

In recent years, through the European Village and European Village Express programmes, 41 projects have been implemented in Ungheni. Forty 40 km of aqueducts, 8 water towers, 1 water reservoir, 5.7 km of sewage system, 1 wastewater pumping station, and 1 sewage treatment plant have been already built. Another 26 projects, worth 119 million lei, will be carried out through the European Village 2 programme. At the same time, roads and bridges have been built and repaired, hospitals and health centers equipped, and kindergartens and schools modernized.

In the dialogue with the prime minister, the mayors highlighted more priority future projects, including the need to rebuild the sewage treatment plant in the municipality of Ungheni, in order to prevent pollution of the Prut River. Moreover, the sides discussed ways to diversify water supply sources, including potential cross-border projects. Additionally, more local roads require repair; in the context, the unprecedented volume of the Road Fund was highlighted: for the year 2025, the budget allocated was initially 1.7 billion lei, to which the Government added another 1 billion lei.

PM Alexandru Munteanu assured that the government would continue investments in infrastructure and modernization of public services. "I urge you to come up with ideas, proposals and innovative projects. We will support serious, well-prepared projects, especially because in the pre-accession period we will receive funds that we must spend wisely," the prime minister pointed out.

The Ungheni district comprises 33 mayoralties with 12 villages, 19 communes, and 2 cities—Ungheni and Cornesti. The total population exceeds 75,000, of whom over 26,000 live in the Ungheni city.
