Moldovan president, European Commission vice-president discuss consolidation of security, protection of elections' integrity
President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with Vice President of the European Commission, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, during her first official visit to Chisinau since taking office in December 2024.
The discussions focused on the European Union's continued support for strengthening Moldova's resilience against hybrid threats, supporting its path to EU accession and improving the living standards of its citizens.
"Today, we discussed how the European Union helps us become stronger – as a state, as a society, as a democracy. We are stronger because we have alongside us the 27 EU member states," said President Maia Sandu.
The head of state welcomed the European Union's decision to allocate 60 million euros in 2025 through the European Peace Facility, in order to strengthen Moldova's defense capabilities, with a significant portion of the funds being allocated for the purchasing of air defense equipment.
"Soon, with the support of the European Union, Moldova will benefit from equipment that will protect our citizens from Russian drones – those that violate our airspace and even fall on our territory, endangering people's lives, homes and our infrastructure. We are a peaceful country. We do not want war. But we have a duty to defend our peace and security, to protect our citizens," the Moldovan president emphasized.
Another priority topic of the discussions was ensuring the integrity of the parliamentary elections due in next autumn. President Sandu thanked the European Union for its decision to support the Moldovan institutions by mobilizing European experts, who will work with national authorities to counter attempts to manipulate the vote.
At the same time, at the meeting, the sides addressed European investments provided for in the Growth Plan for Moldova, valued at 1.9 billion euros, expanding access for Moldovan producers to the EU market, reducing roaming tariffs, as well as other concrete benefits for citizens as Moldova progresses on its path to European Union accession.
