Moldovan president participates in official launch of Cypriot Presidency of Council of European Union
President Maia Sandu today participated in the official launch of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event, hosted by the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, brought together more officials, including President of the European Council António Costa, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During discussions with European leaders, the head of state reiterated Moldova’s firm commitment to continue its reform agenda and emphasized that the country stayed a reliable partner, as it proved resilience and a clear European choice, and is ready for the next steps in the EU accession process.
In 2025, Moldova made significant progress on its European path: it initiated technical discussions with the European Commission on three out of six negotiation chapter clusters for accession, accelerated reforms in the justice system and public administration, strengthened institutional capacities, continued aligning national legislation with the European acquis and completed the screening process. Cooperation with European institutions intensified and EU support was reflected in investments, development projects and measures to enhance economic and energy resilience. At the same time, the implementation of the Moldova Growth Plan has begun.
On the sidelines of the event, the head of state also met Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, with discussions focusing on regional security, efforts to achieve lasting peace on the continent, bilateral cooperation and the European integration process of both countries.
