Moldovan president says media has a vital mission: to defend truth, dismantle falsehoods
President Maia Sandu conveyed a message to all media representatives on World Press Freedom Day. The head of state thanked journalists who serve the public interest and contribute, through their work, to a more informed and aware society. "In a world flooded by waves of manipulation and disinformation, the media has a vital mission: to defend the truth, dismantle falsehoods and help citizens distinguish the good from evil," President Maia Sandu said.
The head of state noted that, in the past year, the Moldovans had witnessed firsthand how important investigative journalism was. "Thanks to courageous reporters, the entire society learned how crime rings attempted, through corruption, to steal the future of this country. And where justice was not for sale, they resorted to intimidation, threats and pressures," President Maia Sandu emphasized.
"Honest journalists often fight an unequal battle: with limited resources, they face propaganda machines well-funded from obscure sources. Therefore, it is our responsibility to stay vigilant, choose reliable sources of information and support journalists who have proved professionalism and integrity over the years. Only in this way, the good-faith journalism will be able to continue to bring the truth into our homes," President Maia Sandu added.
