Moldovan parliament speaker conveys message on World Press Freedom Day

The free press does not mean only news. It means courage, responsibility and respect for the citizen. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today conveyed a message to this effect, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

The speaker thanked those who choose the truth, even when it is uncomfortable.

"Free press does not mean only news. It means courage, responsibility and respect for the citizen. It involves long hours of research, uncomfortable yet necessary questions and constant care not to betray people's trust," said Igor Grosu.

The parliament speaker noted that, in a world full of noise and manipulation, journalists who do their job with dignity are benchmarks not only for society, but also for the future of the country’s democracy.

"I am grateful to all those who support the standards of honesty and professionalism. We should work together for a free Moldova, in peace and prosperity," added Igor Grosu.

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day, in order to raise the awareness of the importance of press freedom and remind governments of their obligation to respect and back the right to freedom of expression, as enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
