Moldovan president conveys message on World Press Freedom Day
The media has a vital mission in a world flooded with waves of manipulation and disinformation: to defend the truth, debunk falsehoods and help citizens distinguish the good from evil. President Maia Sandu today conveyed a message to this effect, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
The official thanked the journalists who serve the public interest and contribute, through their work, to a more informed and aware society.
‘’In the past year, we have witnessed firsthand how important investigative journalism is. Thanks to courageous reporters, the entire society learned how crime rings attempted to steal the country's future through corruption. Where justice was not for sale, they resorted to intimidation, threats and pressures,’’ said Maia Sandu.
The Moldovan president emphasized that honest journalists often fight an unequal battle: with limited resources, they face propaganda machines well-funded from obscure sources.
‘’Therefore, it is our responsibility to stay vigilant, to choose reliable sources of information and to support journalists who have proved their professionalism and integrity over the years. Only in this way, the good faith journalism will be able to continue to bring the truth into our homes,’’ said Maia Sandu.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd as World Press Freedom Day, in order to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom and remind governments of their obligation to respect and back the right to freedom of expression, enshrined in Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
